Part of the purpose of this blog was to keep you updated on developments in Dawn's continued struggle with ALS. We have to let you know that the most recent change is not one we ever wanted to have to post.
Last evening and this morning Dawn has been struggling with her breathing. She has struggled with shortness of breath, not being able to get the depth of breath she needs. This has created a significant level of anxiety. Last evening this struggle lasted for more than an hour, and we eventually had to call Hospice. The nurse on call ended up coming out to check Dawn over. Thankfully she finally was able to get some relief at midnight, and seemed to sleep relatively restfully.
However, this morning the problem was experienced again. She also had a slight temperature that caused additional concern.
We do not know what all this means. We continue to monitor this closely, and anticipate knowing a little more after the nurse visits later this week. We continue to value your prayers and thank you for your love and support.
We will try to keep you posted.

The Collins Family is praying for PEACE for Dawn and a calming such as she has never experienced. May God hold all of you in the palm of His hand and may you feel His presence as you also have never experienced. We love you.
Dawn,
What do you say to someone you have known since the 5th grade and became one the house hold pieces of furniture.I am so sorry for what you are going through, the pain and struggle. Remembering our youth group times has brought many smile and reading your thoughts towards your family has brought many cries. I will always cherish the long hug we shared in the driveway of your mom's house Feb. 2008. Though there was a lot of silence, my heart broke for you that day. I pray for you daily, trusting God will keep you close and give you peace.
I love you,
Bob Thomas

Today during our Palm Sunday service, with great respect and gratitude, Dawn Van Essen was honored not only during announcements and the congregational prayer, but during the message brought by David Carrol, who was our guest speaker today.
The prayers of the entire congregation are with the Veenstra and VanEssen families.
Next weekend (Easter) our Easter musical will be dedicated to Dawn, and with deepest gratitude to her family who built our church, nurtured it for 40 years, and to whom we are grateful for the beautiful sanctuary where we are privileged to worship today.
Many of us were fortunate enough over the years to hear Dawn sing at our church services. We are saddened by her loss, but grateful for the example of strength and courage and unfaltering faith she gave, especially during her difficult struggle with ALS.
May God bless and keep Dawn. We are grateful and inspired by her example of living a true Christian life, as evidenced in the comments made on this website by those who have known an loved her.
As Pastor Paul always said at the close of his services, "May the Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you, and be graciuos unto you; the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace." - Numbers 6:24-26
